In the sixteen years since then the TAC has proven to be one of the most successful civil society organisations in the world, advocating for access to quality healthcare for all who live and work in South Africa. Since 1998, the TAC has held the government accountable for healthcare service delivery; campaigned against official AIDS denialism; challenged the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies to make treatment more affordable and cultivated community leadership on HIV and AIDS. Our efforts have resulted in many life-saving interventions, including the implementation of country-wide mother-to-child transmission prevention and antiretroviral treatment programmes. However, while the success of the AIDS programme is undeniable, that success is now being undermined by the collapse of the public healthcare system in provinces like the Free State, the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Limpopo. At the time of writing, only a fraction of that has been secured. Any fraud, corruption or mismanagement is vigorously addressed in terms of our strict internal policies and the relevant laws. The Treatment Action Campaign is led by a National Counicl that meets four times per year. This body is composed of leaders elected by our membership. It has representation from all seven provinces in which the TAC is currently working. He served in the Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality from 2011 to 2014 as a proportional representative councilor. He stepped down from this position to commit himself full-time to the TAC. He is presently busy with a Diploma in Managing from the College of Public Administration. She has been actively involved with TAC since She has worked for TAC as a Treatment Literacy Practitioner, National Trainer, Provincial Women’s Rights Co-coordinator and District community Health Advocacy Co-ordinator. She has participated at the African Commission on women’s and people’s rights. She worked as an intern at Axess and later moved to the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport. While working there she became a NEHAWU Branch Secretary and in her second term she was elected as the Gert Sibande’s Bargaining Forum Coordinator. She has also served in different portfolios in the ANC, SACP and as an ANCYL Branch Treasurer. A few months later she was elected National Deputy Chairperson of TAC. Portia Serote is a mother of three children who is openly HIV Positive and on treatment. She joined the Treatment Action Campaign in 2004 after being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS together with the father of her second daughter. From 2004 she was integrally involved in TAC’s work, frequently representing TAC at local and international AIDS conferences. In 2005 she started working for TAC as a Treatment Literacy Practitioner based at Far East Rand hospital. She was later elected as TAC’s Provincial Women’s Representative. In 2010, she was elected as the Deputy Chairperson of TAC Gauteng. Andrew Mosane is a gay man who is openly living with HIV. He joined the TAC in 2003 when he found out that he was HIV positive and needed to access treatment. Andrew is presently working on the stigma index survey and serves on a number of community structures including the ward committee for social development. He was elected as the Deputy Chair of the South African National AIDS Council in 2007 (he stepped down in 2012). He has written extensively on HIV, human rights and the law. He has been part of legal teams of the ALP, TAC and SECTION27 that were involved in major litigation around HIV and other human rights issues in South Africa. Mark has been part of TAC’s top leadership since the early days of the organization.
